Day-by-day itinerary

Day 01

Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, and back

Early pickup in Marrakech for the climb over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, a switchback road through the High Atlas above 2,000 meters, with Berber villages and roadside stalls selling argan oil and local minerals along the way. We walk the kasbah at Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco's best-known ksar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site used as a backdrop in numerous film and TV productions — it sits on a hillside above the Ounila River with narrow lanes and uneven stone paths, worth 45-60 minutes on foot. From there we continue to Ouarzazate, nicknamed "the Hollywood of Morocco" for its film studios, for a visit to the Taourirt Kasbah — a 19th-century fortified residence once home to the powerful Glaoui family — and, on request, the Atlas Film Studios, before the drive back over the Atlas to Marrakech in the evening.
