About this tour
The most direct route from Marrakech to the Sahara and back — you're on the road to Merzouga from the very first morning, camping under the dunes on night one, then looping home past Ait Ben Haddou and the Atlas on the way back.
Day-by-day itinerary
Marrakech to Merzouga
We leave Marrakech and cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass, a switchback road through the High Atlas above 2,000 meters, stopping at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed ksar used in numerous film productions, and Ouarzazate, nicknamed "the Hollywood of Morocco" for its film studios, before continuing to the edge of the Sahara at Merzouga. Camels take over for the roughly hour-long ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes, timed for sunset, followed by dinner and an overnight stay in a Berber-style desert camp — pack a warm layer, since nights get cold fast.
Sunrise in the dunes to Dades Gorge
An early climb up a dune for sunrise over the desert, then breakfast and departure west through the Dades Gorge, where the road switches back along the canyon wall through dramatic eroded rock formations. We overnight near the gorge.
Return to Marrakech
We drive back over the Atlas to Marrakech, arriving in the evening — a fitting last look at the mountains that framed the trip.

Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough to see the desert properly?
You get one full night in the dunes and the same mountain and kasbah route as our longer tours — it's a real desert trip, just compressed. For more time in the Sahara, our 4-day Marrakech to Fes tour adds a second overnight camp option.
Do we end up back in Marrakech or somewhere else?
This route is a loop — you return to Marrakech on the evening of day 3.
Is this a private tour, or shared with other travelers?
Private throughout — one vehicle, one driver-guide, your own pace for all 3 days. We don't merge separate bookings into a shared group.
How long is the drive each day?
Day 1 (Marrakech to Merzouga via Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate) is the longest — a genuine full day with stops. Day 2 is shorter, mostly the Dades Gorge crossing. Day 3 is the return drive to Marrakech, also a full day. It's an active 3 days, with photo stops rather than long sightseeing breaks.
Is the camel trek into Erg Chebbi included?
Yes, a sunset camel trek on day 1 is included and is how every camp near Merzouga is reached — there's no driving directly into the dunes. A 4x4 alternative can be arranged for anyone who'd rather not ride.
What is the desert camp like?
Berber-style tents with a hot dinner, usually some music by the fire, and a genuinely cold night once the sun goes down — pack a warm layer even if the day was hot.
Is this trip suitable for older travelers or young children?
Most fitness levels manage it fine — the camel ride is gentle and walk-paced, and driving days have regular stops. Flag any mobility concerns when booking so we can talk through the Ait Ben Haddou visit and camp logistics.
What should we pack?
Layers, above all — the Atlas crossing and desert days can be hot, but the dunes get cold at night. Comfortable closed shoes for Ait Ben Haddou's uneven paths, sun protection, and a scarf for dust and wind are worth having too.
What's the best time of year for this route?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) keep both the mountain crossing and desert nights comfortable. Summer is very hot in the Sahara; winter nights in the dunes are cold — either is doable, just pack accordingly.
Can the pickup location be changed from our riad?
Yes — tell us where you're staying in Marrakech when booking and we'll arrange pickup there, or from the airport if that suits your arrival better.
