Day-by-day itinerary
Marrakech to Dades Valley
We leave Marrakech and cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the switchback road over the High Atlas, stopping at Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO-listed fortified kasbah on the old caravan route, still standing and familiar from film and TV productions shot here — and then Ouarzazate, "the Hollywood of Morocco," for its studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. From there we continue to the Dades Valley for the night, arriving with time to see the valley's rock formations before dinner.
Dades Valley to Merzouga
We start on the Dades Gorge's own switchback road, then Todra Gorge, where sheer canyon walls close in to around 300 meters on either side — worth a short stop to walk into if time allows. Past the gorge the road runs through Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops, before reaching Merzouga's edge, where camels take over for the roughly hour-long ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes, timed for sunset. This is the first of two nights at camp — Berber-style tents, a hot dinner, and usually some drumming by the fire.
A second day in the desert
Because this route builds in a second night, there's a full day to actually spend in the desert rather than rushing through it. Expect a visit to Khamlia village to hear its resident Gnawa musicians (a spiritual music tradition with West African roots), a stop to look for fossils in the surrounding desert, and tea with a local nomadic family — an honest, low-key visit rather than a staged show. The day closes with a second sunset camel trek and a second night in camp, which makes for a noticeably less rushed desert experience than the shorter tours.
Merzouga to Ouarzazate via Rissani and Todra
An early wake-up for a sunrise camel trek — about 20-30 minutes to reach a good dune and watch the light come up — then back to the vehicle for breakfast. We head to Rissani, the old trading town at the end of the historic caravan route from Timbuktu, for a look at its market (smaller and more local than Marrakech's), before a second pass through Todra Gorge on the way to Ouarzazate for the night.
Ouarzazate to Marrakech via Kasbah Telouet
On the way back over the Atlas we stop at Kasbah Telouet, once the mountain stronghold of the powerful Glaoui family — quieter and far less visited than Ait Ben Haddou, but with some of the best-preserved carved-plaster interiors in the region. From there the road runs through the Ounila Valley's Berber villages, a scenic backcountry alternative to the main highway, before the final climb back over the Tizi n'Tichka into Marrakech.

What does the sunrise camel trek on day 4 involve?
A shorter ride, roughly 20-30 minutes, up to a good vantage dune to watch the sun come up over the Erg Chebbi — quieter and cooler than the sunset trek, and optional if you'd rather sleep in.
Is Kasbah Telouet included in the route, and are its entrance fees covered?
Yes, it's a stop on day 5, but the entrance fee isn't included — it's inexpensive and paid on-site, like the other entrance fees on this route.
Is this trip suitable for older travelers or young children?
It suits most fitness levels well, since the pace here is more relaxed than the 3-day version — two desert nights instead of a rushed single overnight. Mention ages and mobility concerns when booking.
What should we pack?
Layers for the temperature swing between desert days and nights, sturdy closed shoes for Ait Ben Haddou and Kasbah Telouet, and sun protection for the driving days.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) give the most comfortable desert temperatures for two nights in camp; summer days can be very hot and winter nights very cold.
