Merzouga Travel Guide

Merzouga is a small town on the edge of the Sahara, and it's where every Through Morocco desert tour ends up for the night — you trade the vehicle for a camel here and ride into the dunes for a camp under the stars. It sits right beside Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco's two great sand-sea dune fields, with dunes that reach over 150 meters in places.

What actually happens in Merzouga

You arrive by private vehicle in the late afternoon, usually after a full day of driving from Marrakech or Fes. From the edge of town, the vehicle stops and a camel trek takes you the rest of the way into the dunes — a walk-paced ride that typically takes around an hour, timed so you reach a high point of the dunes for sunset. There's no driving into the desert itself; camels (or, on some itineraries, a 4x4 as an alternative) are how every camp near Merzouga is reached, whether you're doing the 3-day loop from Marrakech or the longer routes to or from Fes.

The desert camp

Camps near Merzouga offer both shared and private tent setups, usually Berber-style tents furnished with rugs and mattresses rather than a hotel-style room — private tents come with an attached bathroom on most of our tours. It's worth telling us your preference when booking, since it changes the price and the privacy. Dinner and breakfast are typically part of the camp stay, and dinner is often followed by music around a fire; what's included depends on which tour you're on, so check that tour's inclusions list.

Sunrise over the dunes

The camp stay ends with an early wake-up to climb a dune and watch sunrise over the desert, before heading back out by camel and continuing the drive — either back toward Marrakech, or onward to Fes, depending on the tour.

What to bring and what to expect

Days in Merzouga are hot, but nights in the desert cool sharply — even in summer, it's worth packing a warm layer for the evening and overnight. Loose, breathable clothing works better than anything tight for the camel ride, and closed shoes help keep sand out. Fine sand gets into bags and camera gear more easily than you'd expect, so a dust cover or sealed bag for electronics is genuinely useful. This isn't a five-star resort experience — it's a real overnight camp in the dunes, with simple but comfortable tents and shared facilities at most camp setups.

Frequently asked questions

Do I drive into the desert myself?

No — the vehicle takes you to the edge of the dunes, and a camel trek covers the rest of the way to camp.

Can I skip the camel trek?

Ask us when booking — a 4x4 transfer into camp can sometimes be arranged instead, but the camel trek is how every camp near Merzouga is normally reached.

Is one night in the desert enough?

It's enough for the overnight camp and sunrise experience that's included in our tours. If you want more time in the dunes, mention it when booking and we can look at extending the stay.

How cold does it get at night?

It varies by season, but desert nights cool considerably compared to daytime highs even in summer, and can be genuinely cold in winter — bring warmer layers than you think you'll need.

Is the camel trek comfortable for someone with back or knee issues?

It's a gentle, walk-paced ride rather than anything strenuous, but if you have specific mobility concerns, tell us when booking so we can talk through the 4x4 alternative.
