Day-by-day itinerary
Fes to Merzouga
We head south out of Fes through the Middle Atlas, with a stop in Midelt — a quiet market town roughly at the halfway point, useful for a coffee break and to stretch your legs — before dropping down into the Ziz Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves that follows the Ziz River through an otherwise dry landscape. By afternoon we reach Merzouga, where the vehicle stops for good and camels take over for the roughly hour-long ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes, timed for sunset, when the sand shifts through orange and red. Camp is a Berber-style tent setup with dinner and usually some music around the fire — it gets cold fast after dark, so pack a layer even after a hot day.
Merzouga to Dades Valley
You're woken before dawn to climb a dune and watch sunrise over the desert — around 20-30 minutes once you're up there, and one of the better reasons to set an early alarm on this trip. After breakfast, a 4x4 loop takes you to Khamlia village to hear its resident Gnawa musicians (a spiritual music tradition with West African roots) and for tea with a local nomadic family — a genuine, low-key visit rather than a staged show. We also stop in Rissani, the old trading town at the end of the historic caravan route from Timbuktu, before heading to Todra Gorge, where rock walls rise roughly 300 meters on either side of a narrow canyon — worth a short walk in if time allows — and on to the Dades Valley for the night.
Dades Valley to Marrakech
The final day runs through the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M'Gouna, center of Morocco's rose-water industry, and the Skoura oasis, a palm grove dotted with historic kasbahs that once guarded the valley's date and almond trade. From there we climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the switchback road over the High Atlas, before dropping down into Marrakech by afternoon.
