Day-by-day itinerary
Fes to Merzouga
We leave Fes and climb into the Middle Atlas through Ifrane, a hill town built in a European chalet style that's earned it the nickname "the Switzerland of Morocco," and on into the Azrou cedar forest — home to one of Morocco's populations of Barbary macaques, a species of tailless monkey found only in this region and a few pockets of Gibraltar. We stop where they're commonly seen along the roadside. From there the road drops south through changing scenery — cedar forest giving way to arid plateau and eventually the Ziz Valley's palm groves — before reaching Merzouga in the late afternoon, where camels take over for the roughly hour-long ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset. Dinner and the night are at a desert camp; bring a warm layer, since desert nights cool sharply even after a hot day.
A full day around Merzouga
After sunrise over the dunes and breakfast at camp, a full day here rather than a quick pass-through: we visit Khamlia village to hear its resident Gnawa musicians (a spiritual music tradition with roots in West Africa) and share tea with a local nomadic family — a real, unscripted visit rather than a tourist show. The night is at a riad in Merzouga, or back at the desert camp if you prefer.
Merzouga to Dades Valley
An early climb up the dunes for sunrise, then back to camp for breakfast before the vehicle picks up again. We walk part of Todra Gorge, where canyon walls rise roughly 300 meters above a river-fed palm floor — one of the more striking landscapes on this route and worth 30-45 minutes on foot. From there we follow what's known locally as the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs," the valley road lined with old fortified earthen structures once used to guard and store the region's harvests, continuing to the Dades Valley for the night.
Dades Valley to Marrakech
The last day runs through the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M'Gouna and the Skoura palm oasis before a stop at Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco's best-known ksar (fortified earthen village) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site used as a backdrop in numerous film and TV productions. The site sits on a hillside above the Ounila River, with narrow lanes and uneven stone paths — plan on 45-60 minutes to walk through it. From there we cross the High Atlas at the Tizi n'Tichka pass before arriving in Marrakech.
