Dades Gorge Travel Guide
The Dades Gorge is a canyon in the Atlas mountains, part of the wider Dades Valley, known for a switchback road that climbs the canyon wall in a series of tight turns and for the dramatic, eroded rock formations along the valley floor. It's on the route between Merzouga and Ouarzazate on our desert tours.
The valley and the road
The Dades Valley is lined with old kasbahs built to guard the region's date and almond harvests, and the gorge itself narrows into a canyon with weathered, folded rock walls sometimes nicknamed "monkey fingers" for their shape. The switchback road climbing out of the gorge is a scenic stretch of driving rather than a walking destination, and it's covered by private vehicle as part of the route, not a separate excursion.
The "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs"
The broader valley route through here — sometimes called the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs — passes numerous fortified earthen structures, many now in varying states of repair, that once served as granaries and family strongholds along this agricultural valley.
Where it fits in the route
On our 3-day Marrakech desert loop, the gorge area is the overnight stop on day 2, between the desert camp and the drive back to Marrakech. On several of our 4-day-plus routes, it's a stop or overnight between Merzouga and Ouarzazate.

Frequently asked questions
Do we stop to walk around, or just drive through?
The gorge road itself is the main experience — it's a scenic drive. Overnight stops here are typically at a hotel or guesthouse near the gorge rather than a hiking excursion.
Is the Dades Gorge the same as Todra Gorge?
No — they're separate canyons in the same general region, both worked into several of our itineraries. Todra is known for its narrower, taller canyon walls; Dades for its switchback road and the wider valley's kasbahs.
