About this tour
A private, one-way route from Marrakech to Fes over the Atlas mountains and into the Sahara — real passes, real kasbahs, and a night under the dunes at Merzouga.

Day-by-day itinerary
Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate
We leave Marrakech and climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass, a switchback road through the High Atlas above 2,000 meters, with Berber villages and roadside stalls selling argan oil and local minerals along the way. We stop at Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco's best-known ksar (fortified earthen village) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site used as a backdrop in numerous film and TV productions — it sits on a hillside above the Ounila River with narrow lanes and uneven stone paths, worth 45-60 minutes on foot. From there we continue to Ouarzazate, nicknamed "the Hollywood of Morocco" for the film studios built up around its dry, desert-like light, where we spend the night.
Dades Gorge to Merzouga
We drive through the Dades Gorge, where the road switches back repeatedly along the canyon wall through a landscape of dramatic eroded rock formations, then on toward Merzouga. By late afternoon the vehicle stops for good and camels take over for the roughly hour-long ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes, timed for sunset, when the sand shifts through orange and red. Camp is a Berber-style tent setup with dinner and usually some music by the fire — pack a warm layer, since desert nights cool sharply even after a hot day.
Merzouga to Fes via the Middle Atlas
You're woken before dawn to climb a dune and watch the sunrise over the desert, one of the better reasons to set an early alarm on this trip. After breakfast we head north through the Ziz Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves following the Ziz River, and the Middle Atlas cedar forests — home to Barbary macaques, often seen roadside — before reaching Fes for the night.
Fes medina
A guided walk through the Fes el-Bali medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world, taking in the souks and the Chouara leather tanneries, where hides have been dyed by hand in stone vats since medieval times, before the tour ends.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a private tour, or will we be grouped with other travelers?
Fully private — the vehicle, driver-guide, and pace are yours alone for all 4 days. We don't combine separate bookings into one group.
Can this tour run in the opposite direction, Fes to Marrakech?
Yes — the same route works either way; tell us your arrival city and we'll flip the itinerary.
How many hours of driving are involved each day?
Day 1 (Marrakech to Ouarzazate) and day 2 (Dades Gorge to Merzouga) are the longest, each a genuine full day on the road with stops at Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, and the Dades and Todra Gorges. Day 3 to Fes is shorter and mostly driving through the Middle Atlas. None of it is rushed, but it is an active itinerary, not a lounge-by-the-pool one.
Is the camel trek included, and what if I'd rather not ride?
Yes, the sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes on day 2 is included. If riding isn't for you, tell us when booking — a 4x4 transfer into camp can be arranged instead.
What actually happens at the desert camp overnight?
You arrive by camel around sunset, settle into a Berber-style tent, and have a hot dinner, often with some drumming around the fire afterward. It gets properly cold once the sun's down — even after a hot day — so a warm layer matters more than you'd expect.
Is the desert camp shared with other travelers, or private?
Camps offer both shared and private tent options — let us know your preference when booking, since it affects price.
Can we add an extra night in the desert?
Yes — this itinerary can be extended by a day on request, with no change to the rest of the route.
Is this trip suitable for children or older travelers?
It works for most ages and fitness levels — the camel trek is a gentle, walk-paced ride, not strenuous, and the driving days involve regular stops. The main things to flag when booking are mobility limits (Ait Ben Haddou's paths are uneven stone) and how a long car day suits younger kids.
What should we pack for a trip that covers mountains, desert, and a medina?
Layers are the key word: it can be warm in the Atlas and desert by day, and genuinely cold in the dunes at night. Add comfortable closed shoes for Ait Ben Haddou and the Fes medina's uneven stone lanes, sun protection, and a scarf that doubles for dust and mosque-courtyard modesty.
How much walking is involved at Ait Ben Haddou?
The kasbah is built on a hillside with uneven stone paths — comfortable walking shoes are recommended, and the visit is self-paced, usually 45 minutes to an hour.
What happens on the last day, and what time does the tour end?
Day 4 is a guided walk through the Fes medina and the Chouara tanneries, ending with the tour wrapping up there — we can arrange your onward drop-off at a riad or the airport once the walk is done.
