Day-by-day itinerary
Marrakech to Dades Valley
We leave Marrakech and climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass into the High Atlas, stopping at Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO-listed fortified kasbah on the old caravan route, still lived in and familiar from a number of film productions shot here — before continuing to Ouarzazate, "the Hollywood of Morocco," for its film studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. From there we head on toward the Dades Valley, passing through the Valley of Roses (Kelaat M'Gouna, the center of Morocco's rose-water industry) and a stretch of eroded rock formations locally nicknamed the "monkey toes" or "monkey fingers" for their odd, rounded shapes, before settling in for the night.
Dades Valley to Merzouga
A big scenic driving day: the Dades Gorge's switchback road, then Todra Gorge, where the canyon narrows to a corridor with rock walls rising roughly 300 meters on either side. Past the gorge the landscape dries out toward Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops, and by late afternoon the vehicle stops at Merzouga's edge for the camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes — about an hour's ride, timed for sunset. Camp is Berber-style tents, mint tea, and usually live drumming around the fire after dinner; it gets cold fast once the sun's down, so bring a layer.
A full day around Merzouga
Rather than one quick night and a drive out, this extra day is built entirely around the desert itself. Expect a 4x4 outing into the dunes and surrounding desert in the morning, then tea with a local nomadic family — a genuine, low-key visit rather than a staged show, so keep expectations realistic and curious rather than expecting a performance. In the afternoon we stop in Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa musicians (Gnawa is a spiritual music tradition with roots in West Africa, brought to Morocco along old trade and slave routes); a short live set here is one of the more memorable, low-key moments on this route. You can spend the second night back at the desert camp, or swap it for a riad in Merzouga if you'd rather have a proper bed and shower — tell us which when booking.
Merzouga to Fes
The drive north runs through the Ziz Valley's palm groves and up into the Middle Atlas, where the road passes through cedar forest near Azrou and Ifrane — Ifrane itself is a small mountain town sometimes nicknamed "Morocco's Switzerland" for its European-style architecture and (in winter) snow. This forest is one of the more reliable places in the country to spot wild Barbary macaques along the roadside; sightings are common but not guaranteed, since they're a genuinely wild population rather than a managed park. From there it's on to Fes, arriving with the medina still ahead of you.

Frequently asked questions
What makes this different from the standard 3-day version?
The extra day stays in Merzouga instead of continuing on, so there's time for a nomadic family visit and Khamlia's Gnawa musicians rather than just a night in camp and a drive out.
Do we sleep in the desert camp both nights?
You can — or swap the second night for a riad in Merzouga for a proper bed and shower; tell us your preference when booking.
Is this tour private, or shared with other travelers?
Private throughout — your own vehicle and driver-guide, no other bookings joined onto yours.
How long are the driving days between Marrakech and Merzouga?
Day 1 and day 2 are the longest, covering the Atlas crossing, Ait Ben Haddou, and the gorges before reaching Merzouga. Day 3 is unhurried, spent around Merzouga itself rather than on the road, and day 4 to Fes is a shorter half-day-plus drive through the Middle Atlas.
What is the visit with a nomadic family actually like?
It's an honest, low-key tea visit rather than a staged show — a chance to see how a nomadic family in the region actually lives, not a performance put on for tour groups.
Is the camel trek included, and is there an alternative for those who'd rather not ride?
Yes, one camel trek per person is included on day 2 into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset. Let us know when booking if you'd prefer a 4x4 transfer instead.
Is this suitable for families with children or older travelers?
Yes, generally — the camel trek is gentle and walk-paced, and the extra day around Merzouga means less time pressure than shorter versions of this route. Flag ages and any mobility needs when booking.
What should we pack for this route?
Layers for hot days and cold desert nights, comfortable closed shoes for Ait Ben Haddou's uneven paths, and sun protection. A headscarf or light shawl helps with dust on the camel trek.
Are entrance fees or lunches included?
No — entrance fees, lunches, and drinks aren't included anywhere on this route. Breakfast and dinner are covered daily.
Can the pickup location be changed from central Marrakech?
Yes — pickup can be arranged from the airport or your riad/hotel anywhere in Marrakech; tell us the address when booking.
Should I choose this tour or the other 4-day Marrakech to Fes tour?
Choose this one if you want more time in the desert: day 3 is a full day around Merzouga with a nomadic family and Gnawa music in Khamlia. Our 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour spends that day in the Fes medina instead.
