High Atlas Mountains Travel Guide
The High Atlas is the mountain range between Marrakech and the south, home to Mount Toubkal — North Africa's highest peak, at over 4,000 meters — and crossed by the Tizi n'Tichka pass on every one of our desert tours: the road that connects Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, and on toward the Sahara.
The Tizi n'Tichka pass
This is the main road over the High Atlas, climbing through switchbacks well above 2,000 meters before dropping down toward Ouarzazate. It's the route every one of our Marrakech-based desert tours uses to cross the mountains, and it's a genuinely mountainous drive — expect winding roads and a couple of hours of driving each way through the pass itself.
What you pass along the way
The drive runs through Berber villages built into the hillsides, past kasbahs built from the same rammed-earth construction seen at Ait Ben Haddou, and along roadside stalls selling local minerals (geodes and quartz, mined in this region) and argan oil, often run by local cooperatives — the kind of stops that make the crossing itself part of the trip, not just transit time.
Imlil and Mount Toubkal
Imlil, a village at roughly 1,740 meters, is the usual gateway for anyone wanting to get closer to the mountains themselves rather than just crossing them by road — it's the trailhead for multi-day treks up Mount Toubkal, and also works as a lower-key day trip from Marrakech through villages and terraced orchards without committing to a summit attempt.
It's a drive day, not a standalone stop
On our itineraries, the pass is crossed by private vehicle in a single day, usually on the way to or from Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, with brief photo stops rather than a hiking day. If you want dedicated Atlas Mountains trekking, mention it when booking and we can talk about adding an Imlil day trip or discuss options further.

Frequently asked questions
Do we stop along the pass, or just drive through?
Mostly a scenic drive with brief photo stops at viewpoints and roadside stalls — it isn't set up as a hiking excursion on these itineraries.
Is this the same as an Atlas Mountains trekking tour?
No — our multi-day tours cross the pass by private vehicle as part of a longer route. If you want an actual mountain day, our Imlil day trip is the closer fit; ask us if you're after multi-day trekking specifically.
Do we drive close to Mount Toubkal itself?
Not on the Tizi n'Tichka route — Toubkal is reached via a different valley, through Imlil. If seeing it up close matters to you, mention it when booking so we can look at working in that day trip.
