Ouarzazate to Merzouga: What's on the Road Through the Dades and Todra

The drive from Ouarzazate to Merzouga passes through some of Morocco's most dramatic gorge scenery — here's what's on the route and whether it's worth stopping along the way.

The road from Ouarzazate to Merzouga is one of the most scenic driving legs in Morocco, running through palm oases, kasbah country, and two of the country's most impressive gorges before reaching the dunes.

How long is the drive

Driven straight through, it's roughly five to six hours between Ouarzazate and Merzouga, but almost nobody actually drives it straight through, because the stops along the way are a big part of why the route is worth doing at all. Most itineraries, including our own multi-day routes, spread this leg across a full day with stops built in, or split it over two days with an overnight around Dades or Tinghir, which turns what could be a long driving slog into one of the most memorable parts of the trip.

Is it worth stopping at Dades and Todra Gorge

Yes, and we'd treat both as genuine highlights rather than optional detours. The Dades Gorge winds through layered red-rock formations and switchback roads with kasbahs tucked into the valley, while the Todra Gorge cuts a narrower, more dramatic canyon with towering rock walls close enough on either side to feel enclosed. They offer different kinds of scenery within a short distance of each other, and stopping to walk even a short stretch of either gorge is worth the extra time compared to just viewing them from the road.

Is this the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs"

Yes — this stretch of road is commonly known by that nickname, and it's an accurate one. The route passes through the Skoura palm oasis, past numerous kasbahs and ksour built along what was historically a caravan route, through the Dades Valley (also known for its rose cultivation around Kelaat M'Gouna), and on toward Tinghir and the Todra Gorge before continuing to Erfoud, Rissani, and finally Merzouga. Few other drives in Morocco pack in this much varied, historic architecture and landscape over a single day's route.

Is it doable in one day

It's physically possible to do it in one long day, but we don't recommend it if you can avoid it. Splitting the drive over two days, with a night in the Dades or Tinghir area, gives you time to actually stop and walk into the Dades and Todra Gorges rather than just glimpsing them from the car, and it breaks up what would otherwise be a genuinely long day behind the wheel. Several of our itineraries, including marrakech-to-fes and marrakech-merzouga-7-day, structure this leg exactly that way for that reason.
