How Many Days Do You Need in Marrakech?
From a rushed overnight to a relaxed week, here's how much time different Marrakech trips actually need — and where the days are best spent.
There's no single right answer, but there is a practical one: it depends whether Marrakech is your whole trip or the starting point for something bigger, like a Sahara desert tour.
Is two days enough?
Two days is the realistic minimum for seeing Marrakech properly rather than just passing through. On a tight schedule, day one usually goes to the medina — Jemaa el-Fna, the souks, maybe the Bahia Palace or a madrasa — and day two to Gueliz, the Majorelle Garden, and a slower pace with better food. It's doable and plenty of travelers do exactly this, especially if Marrakech is a stop on a longer Morocco itinerary rather than the destination itself. What you lose with two days is flexibility: no buffer for a closed museum, an unexpected nap after jet lag, or just wandering without a plan.
Splitting time between the medina and Gueliz
The medina and Gueliz, the newer part of the city, feel like different places, and most itineraries undersell Gueliz. The medina has the historic sights and the atmosphere everyone comes for; Gueliz has the calmer cafes, contemporary galleries, and easier walking if the medina's crowds have worn you out. A rough split that works for most travelers is roughly two-thirds medina, one-third Gueliz — enough time in the old city to not feel rushed, with a half-day or so in Gueliz as a deliberate change of pace rather than an afterthought.
How Marrakech fits with a desert trip
For a lot of our travelers, Marrakech isn't the whole trip — it's the start or end of a route toward Merzouga and the Sahara. In that case, one to two days in the city before or after the desert leg is usually right; trying to do a full week in Marrakech plus a multi-day desert tour makes for a long trip unless you have the time for it. Our marrakech-desert-express and similar routes are built around this exact pattern: a solid but not exhaustive taste of the city, then several days on the road and in the dunes.
When a longer stay makes sense
If Marrakech is genuinely your main destination — you're not continuing on to Fes or the desert — four to five days lets you do it properly: the major sights without rushing, a hammam, a cooking class, a day trip to the Atlas Mountains or Essaouira, and enough slack to just sit in a cafe and watch the city. Beyond five or six days in the city alone, most travelers start running out of new things to do and are better served putting the extra time into a day trip or a different region entirely.

Frequently asked questions
Is 2 days in Marrakech enough?
It's enough to see the highlights, though it will feel rushed if you also want to relax or take a day trip.
How long should I stay in Marrakech before heading to the Sahara?
One to two days beforehand is typical on our desert-focused itineraries, with more time added on either end if Marrakech itself is a priority.
Should I split my time between the medina and Gueliz?
Yes — the two areas feel different, and a short stretch in Gueliz is a useful break from the medina's intensity.
Is 5 days too long for just Marrakech?
Not necessarily, but most travelers find 4-5 days is the point of diminishing returns unless they add a day trip to break it up.
What's the ideal Marrakech-to-desert split?
Many of our itineraries use one to two days in Marrakech paired with three or more days covering the desert route, though this flexes with total trip length.
Can I see Marrakech in one day?
You can hit the main square and one or two sights, but it will feel like a highlights reel rather than an actual visit.
