Essaouira Travel Guide
Essaouira is a walled port town on Morocco's Atlantic coast, and a coastal stop on several of our Tangier, Casablanca, and Marrakech itineraries — a genuine change of pace after the desert, the mountains, and the busier imperial cities.
Where it fits on our routes
Essaouira appears on our longer Tangier loops after Marrakech and before the final drive back north, on our Casablanca itineraries as a coastal stop after Marrakech, and as a standalone day trip for travelers based in Marrakech who don't want a full multi-day itinerary. It's usually set up as a day trip or an overnight depending on how the rest of that particular itinerary is paced.
The walled medina and the harbor
Essaouira's medina is UNESCO-listed, built inside sea-facing ramparts known as the Skala, constructed in the 18th century by European-trained engineers under Sultan Mohammed III to defend the port. Its blue-and-white fishing harbor is still a working port, not a recreated tourist version — most visits mix a walk along the ramparts with time in the harbor watching the day's catch come in and browsing woodwork workshops nearby, where local thuya wood is carved into boxes and furniture.
Why it feels different from Marrakech
Essaouira sits directly on the Atlantic and is known locally for strong, near-constant winds — part of why it's developed a following among windsurfers and kitesurfers. Temperatures run noticeably cooler than inland cities like Marrakech, even in summer, so a light jacket is worth packing even on a hot-season trip.
A city known for its music
Essaouira is closely tied to Gnawa music, a spiritual tradition with roots in West Africa, brought along historic trans-Saharan trade and migration routes. The town hosts the Gnawa World Music Festival each year, one of Morocco's best-known music events — check dates if you'd like to time a visit around it, since exact scheduling changes year to year.

Is Essaouira included in your other tours, or just specific itineraries?
It's built into several of our longer Tangier and Casablanca routes, plus a standalone Marrakech day trip. If you're on a different itinerary and want to add a coastal stop, tell us when booking and we'll look at working it in.
Is a day trip enough, or should I stay overnight?
Either works, depending on the itinerary. A day trip covers the medina and harbor comfortably; an overnight gives you a slower evening and morning in town before heading back.
What should I pack for Essaouira specifically?
A light jacket or windbreaker, even in summer — the coastal wind here makes it noticeably cooler than Marrakech or the desert legs of a trip.
