CTM and Supratours Buses: How Long-Distance Bus Travel Works in Morocco

CTM and Supratours are Morocco's two major intercity bus operators, and between them they reach almost everywhere the train doesn't — including Chefchaouen and towns near the desert.

If a city isn't on the rail map, there's a good chance CTM or Supratours still stops there. Here's how the two compare and what a long-haul bus day actually looks like.

CTM vs Supratours — what's the actual difference

CTM is Morocco's largest bus operator, with modern coaches, air conditioning, and a route network that covers most of the country, including smaller towns well off the rail line. Supratours is ONCF's own bus arm, built specifically to extend rail journeys into places trains don't reach — its buses often connect directly from a train station, timed to meet arriving trains. In practice both are reliable, comparably priced, and run clean, reasonably comfortable coaches; CTM has a slightly larger network, while Supratours is convenient specifically when you're continuing on from a train trip rather than starting fresh.

Where buses reach that trains don't

This is where buses earn their keep. Chefchaouen, Essaouira, Ouarzazate, and towns near Merzouga are all reachable by CTM or Supratours, filling in exactly the gaps the rail network leaves. A bus from Fes or Marrakech can get you to Merzouga's gateway towns, for instance, though the final stretch into the dunes themselves still requires a 4x4 or a tour vehicle, since public buses stop well short of the actual desert camps. For a lot of the country's more remote, non-rail destinations, the bus is the budget-friendly baseline option.

Booking and the realities of a long bus day

Both operators allow advance booking online, though in smaller towns buying a ticket at the station the same day is still common and usually fine outside peak holiday periods. The tradeoff with buses is time — a route that takes four hours by private vehicle, with stops wherever you like, can take six or seven by bus with scheduled station stops along the way. For travelers on a tight budget with a flexible schedule, that's a fair trade. For a short trip where every day counts, it adds up fast.

Is the bus realistic for a short, packed itinerary

If you've only got a week or less and want to cover several distinct regions — desert, mountains, coast — long bus transfers eat into time you'd rather spend actually seeing those places. Buses are excellent for a traveler with an open schedule going point to point on a budget; they're a harder fit when the itinerary is dense and every transfer day is also meant to include a stop at a kasbah or a viewpoint, which is the kind of flexibility only a private vehicle really offers.

Frequently asked questions

Is CTM or Supratours better?

Both are reliable and similarly priced; CTM has a broader standalone network, while Supratours is especially convenient when continuing on from an ONCF train.

Can I book CTM or Supratours tickets online in advance?

Yes, both operators support online booking, and it's worth doing for popular routes or busy travel periods.

Do these buses reach Merzouga or Chefchaouen?

Yes to both — buses reach towns near Merzouga and go directly into Chefchaouen, filling gaps the rail network leaves.

Is bus travel realistic for a short one-week trip?

It's workable but slow; long bus transfers use up time a tight itinerary usually needs for sightseeing rather than sitting on a road.

Do buses go all the way into the Sahara dunes?

No — buses stop at gateway towns near Merzouga, and the final stretch to the camps needs a 4x4 or tour vehicle.

Are CTM and Supratours buses comfortable for long rides?

Yes, both run modern, air-conditioned coaches that are comfortable for multi-hour trips.
