Chefchaouen Travel Guide: Morocco's Blue City
Chefchaouen is a town in the Rif mountains known for the blue-painted lanes of its medina — one of the most photographed streets in the country. It's reachable as a day trip from Tangier or Fes, or as a stop on our longer loops through the north.
The blue medina, and why it looks the way it does
The blue-washed buildings are Chefchaouen's best-known feature. The tradition of painting the lower walls and doorways blue developed over the course of the 20th century; there are a few theories about its origins, tied to the town's historic Jewish community and to the color's traditional association with the sky and with keeping insects away, though no single account is definitively confirmed. Whatever its origin, the effect today is striking, and most of the visit is simply walking the medina's lanes — nearly all pedestrian-only — with time for lunch and shopping along the way.
What there is to do beyond the blue streets
Beyond the medina itself, the surrounding Rif mountains offer walking options for travelers with more time, including a popular hike to the Akchour waterfalls and a natural rock arch known locally as "God's Bridge," typically a few hours round trip. Most single-day visits from Tangier or Fes stick to the medina given the drive time involved.
Getting there
It's around a two-hour drive from Tangier through the Rif mountains, and roughly three hours from Fes, which means most of a day trip is spent in Chefchaouen itself rather than in the car — though the Fes version is a fuller day given the extra driving.

How long is the drive from Tangier?
Around two hours each way, so most of the day is spent in Chefchaouen itself.
Can I stay overnight instead of doing a same-day round trip?
Yes — tell us and we'll book it as a one-way transfer with an overnight instead of a same-day round trip.
Is the whole town blue, or just parts of it?
It's concentrated in the medina — the old walled town — rather than every building in Chefchaouen; that's the part nearly all visits focus on.
