Is Casablanca a Good Starting Point for a Morocco Road Trip?
Flying into Casablanca is the default for a lot of travelers — here's whether it actually makes sense as the starting point for a Morocco road trip, and how to route from there.
Because Casablanca's Mohammed V Airport is Morocco's main international gateway, a lot of travelers end up starting their trip there by default rather than by choice, which raises the question of whether it's actually a good launching point.
Is Casablanca really the main international airport
Yes. Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca handles the largest share of Morocco's long-haul and international flights, which is why so many itineraries — including several of ours — start or end there rather than in Marrakech, Fes, or Tangier. That doesn't mean it's the only option; Marrakech and Fes both have airports with direct European connections. But if you're flying in from further afield, or your airline only serves one Moroccan city, there's a decent chance that city is Casablanca, making it the practical starting point whether or not it's your first choice scenically.
How easy is it to reach the imperial cities from there
Very manageable. Casablanca to Rabat is about an hour, Casablanca to Marrakech is around three hours by road or by train, and Casablanca to Fes is roughly four hours. None of these are grueling drives, and all of them are served by good roads or rail, which is why a Casablanca start works well for itineraries like our casablanca-12-day or casablanca-8-day routes that loop through the imperial cities and down toward the desert before looping back. Starting in Casablanca doesn't cost you much time as long as your route is planned with it in mind.
Should you fly out of a different city
Often, yes, and this is where an open-jaw routing helps. If your trip moves from Casablanca down to Marrakech and out to the desert, flying out of Marrakech instead of backtracking to Casablanca saves real time and driving. A lot of our multi-day itineraries are built as one-way routes for exactly this reason — you land in one city, travel through the country, and fly out of another, rather than doubling back to your arrival airport. It's worth checking flight costs both ways, since open-jaw tickets aren't always cheaper, but the time saved is usually worth asking about.
What a good route starting in Casablanca looks like
A typical route runs Casablanca to Rabat to Fes, then across to the desert around Merzouga, and down through Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou to Marrakech, finishing with a flight out of Marrakech rather than back to Casablanca. This hits the imperial cities, the Sahara, and the High Atlas without any wasted backtracking, and it's the shape behind several of our own itineraries. If your time is shorter, a simpler Casablanca-to-Marrakech run with Rabat as a stop along the way still covers the essentials without the full loop.

Frequently asked questions
Is Casablanca a good place to start a Morocco trip?
Yes, mainly because it's the main international airport — the city itself isn't the draw, but it's a practical starting point for a wider road trip.
How far is Casablanca from the Sahara Desert?
It's a long drive, typically broken up over several days through Fes or Marrakech rather than done directly, which is why most itineraries treat the desert as a multi-day leg rather than a single push from Casablanca.
Should I fly in and out of Casablanca, or use two different cities?
Using two different cities, such as flying into Casablanca and out of Marrakech, usually saves backtracking on a one-way route.
Can I start a road trip in Casablanca and end in Marrakech?
Yes, this is a common and efficient way to structure a Morocco itinerary, hitting Rabat, Fes, the desert, and Ouarzazate along the way.
Is it better to start in Marrakech instead of Casablanca?
Not necessarily — it depends on your flights; Marrakech has a more atmospheric start to a trip, but Casablanca often has better international connections.
How long should I spend in Casablanca before starting the road trip?
A half day or one night is usually enough before moving on.
Does starting in Casablanca add a lot of extra driving?
Not much, as long as your route is planned as a loop or one-way trip rather than backtracking to Casablanca at the end.
